Optimal Health Comes Naturally with Traditional Chinese Medicine
Being naturally healthy should come, well, naturally. That is why Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has remained popular for over 4,000 years. This comprehensive system has treated numerous health conditions and has been proven effective in clinical settings. Over the last few decades, more and more Western medical researchers have looked into applying TCM and acupuncture into their own practices. Modern TCM and acupuncture integrate the wisdom of empirical tradition, creating up-to-date medical knowledge and practices. To balance the mind, body and spirit, TCM focuses on the body as a whole.
Acupuncture to Treat Pain, Naturally
Traditional Chinese Medicine can be applied many different ways. One of the most popular methods is through the use of acupuncture, a safe, pain-free process that can help alleviate numerous symptoms.
At West Vancouver Wellness Centre, we use an acupuncture technique known as intramuscular stimulation (IMS). Some of the syndromes that can be treated using IMS include back and neck pain, headaches, as well as tendonitis. In using IMS, we insert acupuncture needles into the points of the body where the muscles have shortened or contracted, or at spots where the nerves connect with the muscles. Problems at these points form the basis of many painful conditions. For other conditions, we will complete a clinical assessment and then use TCM meridian theory points accordingly. TCM meridian theory considers the relationship between internal organ systems and the nervous system. The nerves that exist within — and just below the skin’s surface — connect to internal organs via “reflex arcs.” These reflex arcs are stimulated through specific acupuncture points on the skin’s surface using fine needles to influence the nervous system. Correspondingly, this stimulation then influences the function of the internal organs. Applied in this way, acupuncture is used for a wide variety of health conditions.
A typical acupuncture session takes about 45 minutes and is sometimes accompanied by heat or ultrasound treatments.
