Easy Cold and Flu Treatments To Do at Home
Dr. Shannon Feely
If you've picked up a cold or flu, here are some things you can do right now to help your immune system kick that bug.
Wet socks
Effects of the Wet Sock Treatment: This treatment increases the circulation and decreases congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat. It has a sedating effect and many patients report they sleep much better while using wet socks. This treatment can increase the healing response during acute infections. Try for 3 days.
1. Warm your feet first. This is important as the treatment will not be as effective and could be harmful if your feet are not warmed first. Try soaking your feet in warm water for at least 5-10 minutes or taking a warm bath for 5-10 minutes. Dry off feet with a dry towel.
2. Take a pair of thin cotton socks and soak them completely with ice cold water. Be sure to wring the socks out thoroughly so they do not drip.
3. Place ice cold wet socks on feet (….it sounds worse that it feels). Cover with thick wool socks. Go directly to bed. Wrap feet in towel. Avoid getting chilled.
4. Keep the socks on overnight. You will find that the wet cotton socks will be dry in the morning and your feet will be toasty warm.
Avoid excess sugar
A sugary diet suppresses important immune system cells responsible for fighting infections. Read the label: 10g of sugar per 100g of food is a lot, and 2g of sugar per 100g of food is a little.
Water
Drink 1.5 -2 L of water per day. Water is essential to immune system function.
Vitamin D3: 1000 – 2000 IU per day. (Adult dose)
Vitamin C: 1000-2000mg per day. Work up to this dose over a few days as too much Vitamin C too quickly can cause loose stools. The human body also only absorbs 250mg at one time, so take the doses throughout the day. (Adult dose)
Greens: Make your own by juicing 2 cups of spinach, kale or a variety of greens, along with a small chunk of fresh ginger, and 2 fresh oranges. You can also use one of the best greens drinks available, Greens First. An excellent blend of anti-oxidants, herbs and specific vitamins and minerals for boosting the immune system. Sleep
The body heals while we sleep. If you are sick, ensure you get a minimum of 8 uninterrupted hours of sleep to allow the immune system to function fully.
